Soviet advance rates

I made a blog post detailing (on-paper) the rates at which the Soviets planned/hoped to advance during operations in the Cold War, based on translated primary sources. Depending on the terrain and strength of opponent, it ranged from 30 kilometers a day to a hundred.


  • The 1950s and 60s figures seem wisely optimistic, especially when (if I'm not mistaken?) those plans proposed moving troops through atomic-bombed areas.
